In every decision that we make in our business, we try to determine the best option in terms of both environmental and social impact. We feel this sets us apart and makes our store truly unique.
We recycle as much of our waste as possible and constantly look for ways to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. In fact, we actually weigh the amount of trash that we throw away. The average American throws away about 4 pounds of trash per day; our store generates on average 60 pounds per month. Recycling bins are conveniently located in our store for customer use as well. We recycle 100% of our cardboard, paper, aluminum, #1 and #2 plastics, glass and steel cans. We also find ways to reuse other materials that are less easily recycled. For example, we take our bubble wrap and packaging peanuts from shipments back to the mailing stores in Norman for them to reuse.
In addition to recycling, we never send food waste to the dumpster. Nearly expired items are donated to Food & Shelter for Friends and slightly damaged produce goes to the Little River Zoo to feed many of their animals. Other organic waste (like coffee grinds and onion peels) is composted in our worm bin.
We minimize our energy usage by choosing the most efficient products available. All of our lighting and ceiling fans are Energy-Star certified. We also minimize our use of open-air refrigeration.
Our store is cleaned using only natural cleaning products, often only vinegar and water. We always aim to buy items made of environmentally-friendly materials. For example, our door mats are made of recycled tires and our checkout counter is partially constructed of reclaimed wood from another building in downtown Norman.
Native Roots Market supports organic agriculture and biodiversity in farming. Modern conventional farming methods are both chemical and energy intensive. Organically-produced foods are not only better for your health, but also keep the soil, water, and air healthy. Additionally, field workers are not exposed to the highly toxic chemicals used in conventional agriculture. The small Oklahoma farmers we work with use natural growing methods that have been around for centuries.
Native Roots Market supports the global fair trade movement which creates equitable and sustainable trading relationships with developing nations and helps alleviate poverty. By purchasing fair-trade items, you can ensure that the farmer or artisan who grew or made the item was paid a living wage and was employed in safe conditions. Look for fair-trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and crafts in our store.
We take pride in having great customer service and a well-trained and knowledgeable staff. Employee well-being is crucial to achieving this. We strive to make our work environment fun and relaxed. We offer health insurance to our full-time employees and all employees are eligible for our scholarship program. Our employees also receive food credits, discounts, massage coupons, profit-sharing, and other perks.
Finally, giving back to our community is central to our core values. Since opening, we have been involved with many community events and organizations. Some of our past partners include the Little River Zoo, Dreamer Concepts Studio & Foundation, the Pioneer Library System, Meals on Wheels, the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and more. In fact, we donate up to 1% of each month’s sales back to our local community events and fundraisers. In addition, our “Bring Your Own Bag” program gives money directly to local charities.
